Types of rotations offered:
MS4 – Sub-I/Audition Rotation:
Sub-internship (sub-I) or audition rotations are offered to fourth year medical students interested in joining one of our residency programs – Family Medicine or Psychiatry. This type of rotation is designed to challenge the learner with an increased level of independence in patient evaluation, documentation and management. You will be expected, with supervision, to function at the level of an intern to increase comfort, confidence, and practice in the specific field of medicine. These rotations are typically offered from August to December or January based on the program’s availability. Applications for auditions are accepted from April to June, and students can expect to hear back about their application within 2 weeks of submission.
To be considered for an audition rotation, medical students must meet the following criteria:
For D.O students:
- Must have passed COMLEX Level 1
- Applicants who required more than 1 attempt to pass COMLEX Level 1 will be considered on a case-by-case basis
For M.D. students:
- Must have passed USMLE Step 1
- Applicants who required more than 1 attempt to pass USMLE Step 1 will be considered on a case-by-case basis
All requesting students must:
- Provide a Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Be a student of an LCME or COCA accredited medical school. Students from non-LCME or non-COCA accredited medical schools will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Affiliation Agreement between medical school and Meritus
- Provide a copy of medical school transcript
- Have ties and/or interest in the Hagerstown region
- Describe why they are interested in the residency program they are requesting to rotate with
- Have a medical school graduation date within 1 year of the rotation date
MS3 or MS4 – Elective Rotation
Meritus offers 3rd and 4th year medical students the opportunity to complete elective rotations. Similar to the audition rotations, the medical student can expect a higher lever of independence and the ability to grow in comfort and confidence with patient care.
All requesting students must:
- Provide a Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Be a student of an LCME or COCA accredited medical school. Students from non-LCME or non-COCA accredited medical schools will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Affiliation Agreement between medical school and Meritus
- Have ties and/or interest in the Hagerstown region
- Have a medical school graduation date within 2 year of the rotation date
Resident/Fellow Seeking Elective Rotation
Residents and fellows of any specialty are welcome to rotate with us. Rotations can occur in the inpatient and outpatient settings depending on the sub-specialty that is being requested. Rotations will be granted on a case-by-case basis contingent on resource availability.
All requesting residents or fellows must:
- Provide Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Provide a Letter of Good Standing from your current program
- Provide Goals and Objectives of the rotation
- Give a brief explanation of why you are interested in rotating at Meritus Health
Once accepted for a rotation, your residency must assist in providing additional documentation required including a Program Letter of Agreement (PLA) prior to your rotation start date. Please keep in mind that it can take up to 60 days for a PLA to be processed.
Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Midwifery Student Seeking Clinical Rotation
PA, NP, and Midwifery students are welcome to rotate on a case-by-case basis. Generally, these students will need to find a provider within the division who will allow the student to rotate with them. Any rotations granted will depend on resources and availability.
All requesting students must:
- Provide Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Provide a copy of PA/NP/Midwifery School Transcript
- Provide Goals and Objectives of the rotation
- Affiliation Agreement between school and Meritus
- Have ties and/or interest in the Hagerstown region
- Give a brief explanation of why you are interested in rotating at Meritus Health

College or High School Student Seeking Observership
Observerships are a shadowing experience which provides the observer with information about the science and clinical practice of medicine at the physician level. They are a great way to gain more insight into specific specialties and the medicine involved to assist with career selection and/or to increase competitiveness when applying to graduate school. Observerships are limited and offered on a case-by-case basis.
All requesting college students must:
- Provide Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Provide a copy of College Transcript
- Provide a Letter of Recommendation from a professor or instructor
- Have ties and/or interest in the Hagerstown region
- Give a brief explanation of why you are interested in the observership in the specialty you are requesting

All requesting high school students must:
- Provide Resume
- Provide a copy of High School Transcript
- Provide a Letter of Recommendation from a teacher or administrator
- Give a brief explanation of why you are interested in the observership in the specialty you are requesting
