For patients experiencing advanced heart problems, Meritus Health is expanding its lineup of expert care, close to home. The health system is proud to announce the addition of esteemed interventional cardiologists, Dr. Stephen Williams and Dr. Mansoor Ahmad.
“The availability of specialized care within the local community fosters the opportunity for healthcare providers to establish meaningful connections with patients and their families,” said Dave Lehr, Chief Strategy Officer. “We are excited to welcome Dr. Williams and Dr. Ahmad to our team,” he added.
Dr. Williams, a distinguished graduate of Harvard Medical School, brings a wealth of experience to the region. He most recently served as an assistant professor of medicine and director of vascular medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for over 15 years before joining the Meritus team.
Dr. Williams is board certified in both general cardiology and interventional cardiology. He routinely treats patients with heart attacks and coronary artery disease and specializes in peripheral artery disease and vascular intervention.
"Being part of Western Maryland's largest healthcare system enables me to immensely impact patient care in the region," Dr. Williams said.
Dr. Ahmad is board certified in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular disease, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, physicians' vascular interpretation and internal medicine. He completed his residency at the esteemed Cleveland Clinic. Additionally, he further honed his skills through a fellowship at Christiana Care Health System in Delaware.
"It’s all about the experience we can offer our patients. Being part of the Meritus Health system allows for relationships to strengthen between providers on all levels from primary care, to cardiology and ultimately interventional cardiology. That’s a great benefit to be able to offer patients when they are going through heart issues that need a higher level of care," Dr. Ahmad said.
"We are thrilled to witness a growing number of providers seeking to join our award-winning health system," Lehr said. "This enables us to expand our range of services, and keep care close to home for our community,” he added.
At the top of the healthcare game, Meritus Health recently earned an ‘A’ Grade in quality and patient safety from The Leapfrog Group. The health system has been recognized as top employer nationally by Forbes. Additionally, Meritus is in the top 1% of nonprofit hospitals nationally for community investment.
Interventional cardiologists specialize in heart and blood vessel procedures using a catheter. There are a variety of reasons a cardiology patient may be referred to an interventional cardiologist, that include heart attack, heart valve disease, coronary artery disease and more.
Appointments with an interventional cardiologist are by referral only. For more information on interventional cardiology services, visit MeritusHealth.com/Cardiology.
