What Does a Forensic Nurse Examiner Do?

Meritus Medical Center’s forensic nurse examiners are available 24 hours a day, every day, to help women, men and children in times of crisis. They are specially trained to care for patients who have experienced violence, and to support those patients’ legal rights.

The Interpersonal Violence and Abuse Program services include the following:

  • Forensic examination
  • Onsite medical treatment
  • Exams to collect and preserve evidence in cases of sexual assault, domestic violence and domestic abuse
  • Assistance in finding a safe place for shelter
  • Domestic violence screenings and assessments
  • Elder abuse and elder neglect screenings
  • Screenings and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

Our forensic nurse examiners also collaborate with community agencies, including law enforcement, Citizens Assisting and Sheltering the Abused (CASA) and the Child Advocacy Center.
