Intensivist Program

Intensivists are physicians who direct and provide medical care in a hospital's intensive care unit while working with other hospital staff. They are board certified in a primary field such as surgery, internal medicine or anesthesiology and have completed additional fellowship training and board certification in critical care medicine.

Meritus Medical Center includes a continuous intensivist program for care of ICU patients which includes onsite intensivists.

Jack Applefeld, M.D.,

Jack Applefeld, M.D. Medical Director

Dr. Applefeld has been a critical care practitioner for more than 36 years. He earned his medical degree from University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md., and completed his residency at University of Maryland Medical Center in the same city. He completed a fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr Applefeld is board certified in critical care medicine with the American Board of Internal Medicine. Prior to joining Meritus Medical Center, Dr. Applefeld worked for Critical Care Consultants in Arizona. His special interest is in critical care.

Neal Reynolds, M.D.

Neal Reynolds, M.D.

Dr. Reynolds has been an intensive care practitioner for more than 30 years. He earned his medical degree from University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md., and completed his residency at University of Hawaii in Honolulu, Hi. He completed a fellowship at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Dr. Reynolds is board certified in critical care medicine with the American Board of Internal Medicine. Prior to joining Meritus Medical Center, Dr. Reynolds worked at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Md. His special interest is in critical care.

Paul McCarthy, M.D.

Dr. McCarthy has been a critical care practitioner since 2006. He earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine in Dominicia, West Indies, and completed his residency at Canton Medical Education Foundation in Canton, O.H. He completed a critical care fellowship at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, L.A. Dr. McCarthy is board certified in internal medicine and critical care medicine with the American Board on Internal Medicine and . Prior to joining Meritus Medical Center, Dr. McCarthy worked at the Brody School of Medicine in Greenville, N.C. and the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, L.A. His special interest is in clinical research and teaching.

Veena Nandwani, M.D.

Dr. Nandwani has been an Intensivist since 2012. She earned her medical degree from American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles and completed her residency at Mercy Medical Center/Aultman Hospital in Canton, OH. She recently finished a fellowship at the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, LA. Dr. Nandwani is board certified in Critical Care medicine with the American Board of Internal Medicine. Prior to joining Meritus Health, Dr. Nandwani worked at the LSU Health Service Center in Shreveport, LA, and East Carolina University-Brody School of Medicine in Greenville, NC. Her special interest is in Critical Care.

Rhoda Raji, M.D.

Rhoda Raji, M.D.

Dr. Raji has been in critical care since 2009. She earned her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, MA., and completed her residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital, New Haven, CT. She completed a fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in Houston, TX. Prior to joining Meritus Health, Dr. Raji worked at the Hospital Albert Schweitzer, Deschapelles, Haiti, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY. Her special interest is in Critical Care and Women's Health. When not working, Dr. Raji enjoys playing volleyball and basketball, singing, traveling, and community involvement.

Leigh Slater, M.D.

Dr. Slater has been an Intensivist since 2012. She earned her medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA., and completed her residency at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. She recently finished a fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institution in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Slater is board certified in General Surgery with the American Board of Surgery. Prior to joining Meritus Health, Dr. Slater worked at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Departments of Surgery, and Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.

Steven Turley, M.D.

Dr. Turley has been in Internal Medicine since 2007. He earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University, Shreveport, LA, and completed his residency at LSU Health Science Center, Shreveport, LA. He recently finished a fellowship at the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, Greenville, NC. Dr. Turley is board certified in Nephrology and Internal Medicine. Prior to joining Meritus Health, Dr. Turley worked at the Willis-Knighton Health Center, Shreveport, LA, and the Uintah Basin Medical Center, Roosevelt, UT. His special interest is in Nephrology.
