Cervical Oncology

Cervical cancer begins in the opening to the uterus called the cervix. Normal cervical cells can develop into pre-cancerous cells. If your healthcare provider identifies changes in your cervical cells, a variety of evaluation tools are available.

How is cervical cancer diagnosed?

Cervical cancer is typically diagnosed in the pre-cancer stage thanks to early diagnosis through the Pap test. This test, coupled with other diagnostic tools and tests:

  • Pelvic exam - examining the vagina, cervix, uterus, and other organs
  • Pap and HPV tests - collecting cervical cells for examination
  • Colposcopy - magnifying the cervical cells for closer examination
  • Biopsy - removing cervical tissue to test for abnormal cells

After diagnosis

After diagnosis, your healthcare provider will run additional tests, such as chest x-ray, CT scan, MRI, and PET scan. These tests will determine if the cancer has spread and determine the appropriate method of treatment - surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation. Your prognosis depends on the stage of cancer, your overall health, and the treatment decisions you and your healthcare provider make.
